If a child has good phonemic awareness, they can easily Duck Hand the words and identify them when you give the sounds. They can simply play with the Monster Spelling Piano app, learn the Monster Sounds, and start working through the 36 pre-readers.
If they struggle to segment and blend, the activities in the satpin handbook are invaluable.

These activities act as an immunisation against illiteracy. The focus is on phonemic awareness and phonological working memory.  This prepares the brain for phonics.

Master this first: Duck Hands, Lines and Numbers add the Monsters

Next push up the monsters and replace with Sound Pics

Finally put the Sound Pics on the Monsters (1 at a time) and draw the Sound Pics. Write the word 2 or 3 times, saying the sounds.

We will use this routine to secure any words in the orthographic lexicon
Speech sounds, spelling and meaning are bonded.
