Show the Code!

We are the first to show which letters are graphemes and their sound value with Phonemies®, so children can learn the code that phonics programmes aim to teach within real books, without having to wait until graphemes and sight words have been explicitly taught. For some children, this is the only way that makes sense to their brains!

Ask libraries to order the One, Two, Three and Away! series for you, so that you can read them for free.

Rather than learning all the graphemes first, and hoping they have the phonemic awareness to blend them, they ‘follow the Monster Sounds to say the word’ (supporting the phonemic awareness needed to map words for reading and spelling) so they know the word FIRST, and then their brains notice the graphemes. As they do this with words they’ve seen before, they stop looking at the Phonemies first and say the word while looking at the letters.

You can use the Phonemies screen on the Monster Spelling Piano app (for tablets, £14.99 one-time payment), or use the full MyWordz® technology, which is £75 per year. Sign up at https//MyWordz.tech You can use it on a laptop via a URL and get app licences in your account, to use on devices for $5.75 per year.

MyWordz® is shown here, and in the clip showing Amari building the sentence.

Speech Sound Monsters - Phonemies

We can bypass using a systematic, explicit phonics programme in the early years.

Learn how to support all children to map words in both directions (speech to print AND print to speech) in ways that align with their own indiviual pronunciation code and needs.

You may be able to better support your dyslexic child through effective bidirectional word mapping than with a programme!

Start with the Show the Code for Word Mapping Mastery course. It might be all you need to help them overcome the reading and spelling challenges associated with dyslexia.

Getting Started

You will need at least the Monster Spelling Piano app, to show the Phonemies (Speech Sound Monsters)

Download and print the first 12 mapped books and all words from the 36 Pre-Readers.

Price:
£45 / AU$85

Please also order a Monster Spelling Mat pack (used within The Spelling Routine) when ready, and
subscribe to the e-library.

Although you can order the One, Two, Three and Away! books directly from The Reading Hut you can also ask your local library to stock the series, so your child can read them in hard copy at home and it won't cost you anything! Australian libraries can stock them too.

Children usually only need to see the Pre-Readers and Introductory Readers mapped before moving on to reading without the Phonemies®.

From the Blue Platform Readers onwards, your child will be reading without the code overlay, and then they just keep reading!

All are doing the same thing, throwing snowballs. But what about the consequences, depending on your intent and target?

Our goal at Phonics Reform England (PRE) is not just to make phonics work for all. These books are also mapped to show which letters are graphemes and their sound value.

But it’s also about what else is needed at the same time: early language development, opportunities for discussion, and a real focus on oracy.

Children immediately notice the difference between throwing snowballs at friends who are running around laughing and having fun together, and throwing snowballs at a tethered goat that cannot escape. They talk about fairness, empathy, relationships, emotions, and consequences.

That’s the point. Literacy is not just about decoding print. It’s about building language, thought, empathy, and understanding through meaningful interaction.

And as you can see, children at Back Plains State School have been creating fabulous new characters, including the new Purple-hat family, and painting Story Peg People!

The Monster Spelling Piano app will run on most tablets made within the last five to six years, as long as they meet these basic requirements:

📱 For iPads (iOS)

🤖 For Android tablets

If your tablet can run apps like YouTube Kids or ClassDojo without issues, it will comfortably run the Monster Spelling Piano.

Ask libraries to order the One, Two, Three and Away! series for you, so that you can read them for free.

Ask your local library to stock The Village With Three Corners series so that you can read all One, Two, Three and Away! books at home, for free! UK libraries primarily order books and resources through specialist library wholesalers and suppliers, such as Askews & HoltsGardnersPeters, and ProQuest.
Simply send them the list of ISBNs and request the books for your child. The library is the best place to go, to read the Roger Red-hat books. The Griffin Pirate stores, Puddle Land and the Tim and Tobias books coming soon.
