Word Mapping Mastery® matters because it gives learners a clear and reliable way to connect speech and print, enabling them to read and spell words independently without guessing or memorising. By building secure orthographic knowledge, it supports accurate writing, reduces frustration for those who struggle, and makes the structure of words visible and logical, which is especially important for neurodiverse learners. Over time, this leads to more efficient word storage, greater confidence, and full access to reading and spelling.

Word Mapping Mastery®

To secure Word Mapping Mastery®, children need to move into the self-teaching phase, where they can independently work out and store new words. This phase is often kick-started by the core code introduced through phonics, but it goes beyond taught correspondences as learners begin to map words for themselves. Crucially, this self-teaching happens in both directions, from print to speech and from speech to print, strengthening both reading and spelling. We will share a range of activities that support this bidirectional word mapping, helping children build secure, flexible, and lasting orthographic knowledge.
