Speedie Readies
Children learn to map words from speech to print, and from print to speech. Adults guide them into the self-teaching phase so they can begin reading with independence and confidence. We give brains what they need, when they need it!
Come and meet new friends in the Village With Three Corners!
Upstream screening and phonemic awareness support, using stories to build excitement for speaking and listening, and mapped books that include non-speaking children while supporting self-teaching, with Best Start-aligned training.
The missing link is that we Show the Code with books children actually want to read, so they stay curious, keep exploring the connections between speech and print, and are motivated to explore more. If they don’t know it, we SHOW it!
Learn about the Show the Code approach to early reading self-teaching on ShowTheCode.com if you’re new to the Don’t Make Them Wait mindset.
When we show the code with mapped words, it works like training wheels for children learning to ride a bike.

Reduce the Cognitive Load

Because every child deserves a smooth ride into reading and spelling.
All are doing the same thing, throwing snowballs. But what about the consequences, depending on your intent and target?
Our goal at Phonics Reform England (PRE) is not just to make phonics work for all. These books are also mapped to show which letters are graphemes and their sound value.
But it’s also about what else is needed at the same time: early language development, opportunities for discussion, and a real focus on oracy.
Children immediately notice the difference between throwing snowballs at friends who are running around laughing and having fun together, and throwing snowballs at a tethered goat that cannot escape. They talk about fairness, empathy, relationships, emotions, and consequences.
That’s the point. Literacy is not just about decoding print. It’s about building language, thought, empathy, and understanding through meaningful interaction.
And as you can see, children at Back Plains State School have been creating fabulous new characters, including the new Purple-hat family, and painting Story Peg People!

Children learn to read because they can see how words are spelled. Speedie Readies provides children with 52 pre-mapped books that make the structure of English visible, so they can learn the code through reading and move into self-teaching without relying on memorisation or guesswork. After the Intro Books text is regular
What will you learn during the training? The Speedie Readies Reading Corner is about:
-
Children learning by reading pre-mapped text
-
The full code being made visible in books, not drip-fed through instruction
-
Repeated exposure to mapped words in meaningful sentences
-
Statistical learning through reading, not explanation
-
Self-teaching emerging because nothing is hidden
The mapped books are the core mechanism. Everything else supports access to those books.

The Whole Code: Bi-directional word mapping within meaningful context eg the One, Two, Three and Away! series, set in The Village With Three Corners, that supports self-teaching and facilitates earlier orthographic mapping.

Show the Code - Speech to Print! Very quickly they don't need the words to be mapped. But if they do need help, they know how to get it.
