Using MySpeekie as an AAC
Getting Started!
MySpeekie® is the world’s first one-screen AAC, and if you are used to traditional AAC devices, it may seem a little different at first. What children are doing is typing the speech sounds they are not yet producing. When those sounds are blended, the corresponding word appears — and can be voiced.
Because reading and spelling are based on this same process — mapping speech sounds to letters — children will soon begin to self-teach reading and spelling, especially if you explore the other support corners and activities.
Show them the Phonemies® — these show the monster moves and sounds. They can then see them on the Phonemies screen. Children become especially interested once they have typed a few words and can see how the technology works.
You might start with their name. If it is not yet in the word bank (when you click Check Word), simply request that it be added.
Get started with a few words and phrases. Type the Speech Sound Monsters, click Show Word, and keep going.
The voice output can sometimes sound a little odd for single words, but we are working on that!
