Speedie Readies: One, Two, Three and Away! with The Code Overlay. The Upstream Team supports the Word Mapping Mastery System®. The pre-mapped Village With Three Corners book series gets children excited about reading in Reception. Learn why this matters on PRE.
Let's Show the Alphabetic Code!
The Orthographic Mapping Tool that shows which letters are graphemes for every word!
Mapped Words® make visible what instruction intends to teach by showing how written words are structured. This supports the early development of self-teaching, so reading itself can drive learning, rather than requiring structured literacy or structured word inquiry to compensate for gaps that arise when self-teaching has not yet emerged. Type the sounds, see the word. Type the word, see the code. MyWordz® offers orthographic mapping tools: MyWordz® with MySpeekie®.

The Code Mapping® Tool
The Code Overlay with Graphemes Shown
Each word is segmented into graphemes, not individual letters. A grapheme is the letter or group of letters that represents one speech sound (phoneme). Every letter in the word belongs to a grapheme. Alternating colours show where one grapheme ends and the next begins, so the structure of the word can be seen at a glance. The first grapheme is black, the next is grey, and this pattern continues across the page. Split digraphs are shown in blue.
To see the phonemes, use the MyWordz® Technology, where the Phonemies® reveal each sound value.
Type words, process them, and the graphemes aligned with the IPA will be shown. Using a different accent? Click on the word to change the graphemes. To download the text, for example into a Word document, and change the size and font, you will need the MyWordz® tech.
Go to Map and Drag Red Words (Manual Mapping), as this feature is located there.

Many weak readers have an underlying difficulty connecting letters and sounds. This shows them which letters are graphemes, and the read-aloud, especially if someone else reads it first, shows the sound value.
A lite free version is available on Speedie Readies, and a downloadable version that can be adjusted for size and font is available within the Innovate UK funded MyWordz® technology.
In England, children learn to map words through phonics, but this means they are only shown around 100 letter-to-sound correspondences. This is enough for some to begin self-teaching, but not for one in four learners. Those children, in particular, need to be SHOWN the phonics code. Even if not using our products and services please do add The Spelling Routine to your existing toolkit - visit our Spelling Routine site and do this with high frequency words. To store words in the orthographic lexicon, they must connect the speech sounds, spellings (the graphemes), and meanings. They need to understand how the orthographic code works. When they use our Code Mapping® technology, they can see the graphemes in all words, which helps secure orthographic knowledge. It reveals which phoneme-to-grapheme and also grapheme-to-phoneme correspondences are never taught in systrmatic, synthetic phonics programmes, and with less teaching (instruction) needed as the code is shown.

When you use the Monster Mapped® words, the Phonemies also show the sound value (phonemes) for every grapheme.
Speedie Word Mapping: Show the Code Speech to Print AND Print to Speech.
Phonemies® are child friendly speech sound characters that make the sounds of English visible. Children type Phonemies in MySpeekie® to say what they want to write. They also see Phonemies when they check the structure of a written word. Phonemies don’t replace phonics and they don’t link to letters. They make the speech side clear.
100 orthographically mapped stories with Phonemies that make every word decodable and meaningful to every child, at any time, separate from systematic phonics instruction. Use alongside your whole-class synthetic phonics programme with a TA, and every child will not only pass the PSC but, more importantly, learn to read with independence, fluency, and comprehension before the end of Year 1.
