Snap and Crack
This is a highly effective way to teach reading comprehension skills in a fast activity that centres on a short piece of text. Teachers using The Speech Sound Pics (SSP) approach frequently snap a photo of a page of text and put it on the whiteboard in a classroom setting, and then crack the comprehension as a group activity. We are Cracking Comprehension!
Choose a page of text and number the lines. Display a photo on the whiteboard or place the book inside a plastic wallet so it can be marked. The adult reads the text aloud and the children identify and discuss any unfamiliar words.
Children then take turns answering and creating questions. They must justify their answers by referring directly to the text and giving the relevant line number. They also consider the difference between a speaker’s response, which might be appropriate in conversation, and a writer’s voice, where they need to structure a clear written comprehension answer.
This activity is used within our centre with neurodivergent learner. As much explicit instruction as they need, and no more. Get in, Get out!
